Perthshire Tour Scotland
Perthshire offers a wealth of attractions. It is aptly known as 'Big Tree Country' and is positioned within striking distance of both Glasgow and Edinburgh.There is an abundance of Highland scenery (Highland Perthshire), whisky distilleries, excellent visitor attractions including Blair Castle which is the home of the Atholl Highlanders, Europe's only legal private army.There is also a superb theatre at Pitlochry with a rolling repertoire of plays.We can design a Perthshire tour to match your interests and for illustration purposes provide below a four day tour itinerary.
Day 1
Leisurely drive to Kenmore following the Tay Valley. Visit:
- The Crannog Centre, a unique re-constructed Iron Age roundhouse on stilts built on Loch Tay. A guided tour is provided and there are opportunities to participate in ancient crafts. Popular with all ages.
- A leisurely walk (about 1 hour) along the banks of the Tay to Taymouth Castle Taymouth Castle More a Victorian edifice than a traditional turrets and battlements affair, but very interesting from an architectural viewpoint. To be converted into a 5 star hotel. Entrance not guaranteed but will try. Traditional home of the Campbell Clan.
- Visit Fortingall, home of the famous yew tree, which is alleged, to be between three and five thousand years old and possibly the oldest living organism in Britain.
- Visit the Kenmore Hotel, Scotland 's oldest inn dating back to 1572 where there is found on an inside wall a genuine, authentic poem written by Robert Burns.
- Visit Falls of Acharn, entailing a short uphill walk of about half a mile. If feeling energetic can walk on to the site of a remote stone circle remote stone circle. Excellent views.
Day 2
- Castle Menzies, more of a traditional type castle and home of the Menzies Clan.
- Leisurely drive along the north of Loch Tay taking in an ancient settlement.
- Visit Ben Lawers and walk the nature trail (about 1 hour).
- Possible visit to derelict "ghost village" on the banks of Loch Tay
- Drive to scenic Killin and the Falls of Dochart (Good photo opportunities).
- Return along the south side of Loch Tay and return to Pitlochry taking in a very impressive Stone Circle near the side of the road.
Day 3
Options: Either a relaxing a day in Pitlochry visiting local sites (e.g. distillery) OR Drive to Stirling: 57 miles or 68 minutes.
- Visit Castle (two hour tour). Closes 1800
- Visit site of famous Battle of Bannockburn
- Return to Pitlochry
Day 4
Leave Pitlochry for Edinburgh/Glasgow Possible visits en-route include:
